Here’s what Sobrato’s project to house Santa Clara’s very poor would look like

Santa Clara city officials have released renderings of an innovative approach to very low-income housing proposed by billionaire developer and philanthropist John Sobrato earlier this month.

In the released renderings, Sobrato’s plan for fitting 200 “micro units,” which would each house a single person, are fit on a 2.5-acre tract at the intersection of San Tomas Expressway and Monroe Street. The tract must be used for low-income housing, but the funds to develop it went away when the state eliminated municipal redevelopment agencies in 2012.
