Tenants’ Rally at San Jose City Hall
September 16 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Purpose: As tenants and community, we must continue calling for action on anti-displacement in San Jose. The event will include a press conference and a rally to unite and energize our movement. El grito de los inquilinos (The Tenants’ Cry) is a rally and celebration of history, unification, and solutions to secure a future with strong tenant protections and development without displacement.
Who: SOMOS Mayfair/ Vecinos Activos, Sacred Heart Housing Action Committee, and LUNA. Organizers welcome all allies and communities of color to attend and mobilize anyone impacted by displacement and gentrification in San Jose. Media is welcome to attend to uplift the voices of tenants impacted by displacement.
What: Explain the history of September 16, provide expert testimony on tenant realities, propose concrete solutions to San Jose’s gentrification and displacement crisis.
1. Protection: Local tenant preference policy for new housing developments. Expand rent control to all housing units. Improve “just cause” by eliminating criminalization of tenants
2. Preservation: Strengthen the San Jose Ellis Act
3. Production: Equitable new housing development without displacement
Statewide News: AB 1482 (“Tenant Protection Act of 2019”) passed the California State Assembly floor, and is now moving to the governor’s desk. The governor has stated that he will sign the bill into law. SB 329 will be decided soon. As a result, we will have “just cause” protections at the state level that will benefit millions of renters in California. Additionally, the new statewide rent increase maximum will be set at 5 percent + the consumer price index (CPI aka inflation).
Local News: The San Jose City Council study session on anti-placement has been postponed from September 16 to September 27.
